The results of a bibliometric study of a fund of dissertations in library and information sphere, defended in the Dissertation Council of the Saint Petersburg State Institute of Culture. The main indicators of the research are the number of defended dissertations in different specialties for different periods of the council’s existence; change the subject of defended dissertations in different years; heads of dissertational research, who produced the largest number of dissertations. The main stages of the Dissertational Council of the Institute from 1938 to the present time are considered. It was revealed that the most productive work of the Dissertational Council was in the 1970-1980’s, which account for more than three hundred protected dissertational studies. The analysis of the themes of dissertations showed that it changed over time both in the areas of library and information activities, and in the approaches they proposed in them to solve the tasks posed.
