In his poetic heritage, including such cycles as the «West-Östlicher Divan» and «Zahme Xenien», Goethe uses extensively the symbolism of natural elements in their traditional symbolic meaning, and reinterpreting these images according to his own natural philosophical concepts, his research in natural science and in accordance with his philosophical views. Every force of nature is meant as a complex, multifaceted phenomenon, and entails a series of symbolic images, significantly enriching Goethe s literary works on the structural and semantic levels.
