The formation of research approaches to the art of medieval Armenia took place in the 19 century under the influence of the ideas of national modernization. The value of monuments was understood due to antiquarian interests, theological reflection, research in the field of geography and philology and the spread of traditions of travelling. Journal « Basmavep » published articles on the revaluation of the national cultural heritage in its comparison with the European and global artistic practice actively. Methods of analysis and systematization of monuments of medieval Armenian art developed in the periodical press.
