Vital and tanatal basis of initiation

The relevance of the stated theme is connected with the growing practical interest in initiation, the most ancient spiritual practice of mankind, which has the potential of social stabilization and identif cation of an individual. The inef ectiveness of the reception of this ritual is largely due to a lack of understanding of the content of the vital and tantalistic nature of initiation and the specif cs of their interaction. In the article, using the example of archaic age initiation, historically basic for initiating practice, the thematic features that constitute the vital basis of initiation are identif ed. In the main theme of initiation – the new birth (resurrection) of the individual – the vital direction of initiation was expressed most clearly. One of the paradoxes of initiation was that the vital mission intensif ed after the preliminary realization of the tanatal mission. The experience of ritual death was not only aimed at discovering the hidden abilities of a neophyte, but, most importantly, gave him the opportunity to discover the spiritual world and, having «reborn», become part of it. This had a philosophical nature, contributed to the necessary change in the consciousness of the neophyte, which was equivalent to the victory of the human spirit over the limitations of the material world, over death. It is the vital signif cance of initiation that explains the phenomenon of its historical stability, the existence at all stages of cultural genesis.
