«Musical Fridays» by M. P. Belyaev as a type of artistic and creative community

The article is devoted to «musical Fridays» – a unique creative Association in the culture of Russia, created by a rich St. Petersburg timber industrialist and maecenas Mitrofan Petrovich Belyaev (1836–1904). The author seeks to substantiate the important cultural role of this community in the life of Russia, the development of its native musical traditions and self-consciousness. The article shows the periods of formation of a new artistic and creative community, including professional musicians and music lovers, whose goal was to serve the idea of «national character in music», «new Russian school» in the field of performing, concert, publishing, competition, and charity activities. The story of the creation of «musical Fridays» is told. The types, the program of musical Friday evenings, and the composition of «Belyaev» participants – are considered in detail. The features of their appearance on «music Fridays» are described. Considerable attention is paid to the personality of M. P. Belyaev, the absolute guarantor of the fruitful activity of this artistic and creative phenomenon.
