To date, the observations of Nikolai Vasil’evich Gogol’ on ballet have not drawn due attention of the researchers. Particularly,
he stated his point of view on the essence of this dance art in the article «Saint Petersburg Notes of 1836». From the mid 1830’ s
Nikolai V. Gogol’, judging about life and art from the viewpoint of critical realism, addresses the questions of theatre and ballet
as a critic and begins the development of an aesthetic concept. Its criteria were the same for all the arts, including dance – a
plastic art very close to fi ne art. Historical and theoretical analysis shows the peculiarity of Nikolai V. Gogol’s perception of ballet
and his refl ections on the development paths which would allow the entertaining performances aimed at the outer eff ects to
rise to the level of a lofty dance performance.
