The Gothic Revival as a unique phenomenon of British art became a starting point for large-scale restoration works towards the end of the 18 and during the 19 century over the whole of the UK. The 18 century started the discussions about restoration and conservation methods of Gothic architectural monuments in England. The Society of Antiquaries of London contributed increasingly towards the forming of theoretical basis of preservation studies of historical heritage of the British nation.
