«Several habits of English women» of Wenzel Hollar and engraving of «mods and morals» in XVII century

The term «engraving of mods and morals» is usually applied to the genre etchings of XVIII century, depicting the gallant society; however, this type of graphics appears earlier. In several cycles of etchings of Wenzel Hollar and in works of French engravers of the XVII century Jacques Callot, Abraham Boss, Jean de Saint-Igny characters are presented in a particular action or in an interesting situation, with special emphasis on detailed and careful design of the costume and accessories of each person. The article proposes to extend the chronological scope of the use of the term «engraving of mods and morals» by reference to XVII century.
