The article analyzes the phenomenon of echo chamber in the system of modern mass communications and
their infl uence on the social functions of modern mass culture. The study allows us to identify several approaches
in the scientifi c literature to this phenomenon. The fi rst shows that echo chamber is a product of the rapid
development of information and communication technologies of the past decades. This approach considers,
above all, the technological reasons for the formation of conditions for the creation of closed communicative
cells. The second approach is more related to the reasons that lie in the fi eld of psychology. A visit to an echo
chamber on social networks is a kind of attempt to close off alternative information and, not always consciously,
looking for ways of confi rming personal bias and bias in the process of information exchange. The third approach
suggests that the phenomenon of an echo chamber may occur not only because manipulations with personal
data have become a profi table business for fi rms operating on the Internet, but also in the interests of various
public, non-governmental organizations, including political parties. The report examines the social aspects of
this phenomenon. As the main conclusions, it is pointed out that this phenomenon limits the possibilities of
information exchange, creates the illusion of communication and complicates objective perception, especially the
opposite point of view. This leads to the fact that this phenomenon can infl uence political and social polarization,
extremism, and in some cases create conditions for the formation of such a phenomenon as cultural tribalism.
