Eastern infl uences in Byzantine ceramics of 9th–15th centuries

The study of Oriental infl uences in the Byzantine applied arts is associated with the analysis of techniques,
market research products, identifying a group of decorative and visual motifs. The interpretation of the Eastern
types of art works is noticeable in the early Byzantine clay lamps and vessels-«ampoules». Glazed ceramics of
Constantinople, Corinth and Patleina of the middle Byzantine period is characterized by the active use of elements
of Oriental decor: geometric patterns, «guilloche», architectural forms (arcade) and plant ornamentation (palmette,
rosette, acanthus). White-clay polychrome ceramics is decorated with complex fi gurative compositions, fl oral and
zoomorphic elements coexisting with linear ornament and Kufi c inscriptions. Red clay pottery of Pergamum and
Trebizond is decorated with traditional Oriental pattern, knots and braiding. The shape and decor of some ceramic
products imitate Sasanid metalwork.
