Ancient painted pottery: from the «thing of household use» to the «art objeсt in the museum»: the perception, collecting and study

The subject matter of the article is the changing of the perception of athenian paited pottery through the centuries. Being made as just pots for household or cult use, athenian black- and red-fugured vases had been forgotten after the fail of Ancient Greek civilization. In Europe of 17-18centuries, being excavated in many places of the Mediterranean world, these vases became an object of interest of connoisseurs, taking places first in Kunst-cameras, as some curious things - petrified skeletons of animals, shells, jewels, and later - in the museums, together with ancient sculptures of marble and bronze. The end of the 19 - beginning of the 20 century have again changed the perception of the ancient painted pottery: on the same wave as the interest to the attribution of the old European paintings, the «century of attribution» of ancient vase-painting started. With the interest to formal stylistic features of the painting on pots the perception of them as «works of art» started. Thus, being not created for the museum context, ancient pots became museum exhibits. And though there were many advantages in this for studying the pottery - there were also some disadvatages, like treating of the pottery not like its creators and contemporaries used to treat.
