Cultural heritage site in the context of the military hospital: Engineering Castle in 1941–1945

Based on a variety of historical sources, including unpublished archival documents, the vast majority of which are first introduced into scientific circulation, an analysis of key aspects of the history of the Engineering Castle during the Great Patriotic War and the blockade of Leningrad is carried out. Special attention is paid to the period when the Leningrad Red Banner Military Engineering School named A. A. Zhdanov was evacuated to Kostroma and evakogospitali No. 1448 and No. 1449 arrived in the castle from the Karelian Isthmus. The article shows how from 1941 to 1944 in the castle fought for the life of wounded and sick soldiers and officers Leningrad doctors: V. N. Vasilyev, A. Ya. Ishchenko, E. L. Kevesh, P. A. Kuprianov, G. D. Obraztsov, A. M. Foy, V. S. Shabunin. The role of the Department for the Protection of Monuments of the City and personnel of hospitals, in the worst conditions of the blockade, which sought to preserve the architectural appearance of the building, has been studied.
