World War I in illustrations and stories in newspaper-magazine «Volunteer» by artist Foma R. Raylyan, 1914-1915

The article is devoted to the unique edition - a weekly newspaper Volunteer, founded in the beginning of World War I. Its peculiarity consisted in the fact that the Volunteer’s publisher was not a professional writer, but a painter Foma R. Raylyan. He created an illustrated newspaper/magazine on his own meager resources to publish documentary material: letters from the front, poems and stories of participants of battles, photos and drawings. The subtitle of the newspaper «War in illustrations and stories written by its participants» eloquently testified about actual events at the front, and drawings of the publisher and its correspondents visualized them.
