Antiquarianism in the context of the Gothic Revival in England of XVIII century

Antiquarianism that is currently considered a phenomenon preceding modern archeology is of increasing interest for art historians as an inexhaustible source of artistic importance. This phenomenon having taken shape of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1717 possesses rich history with a great deal of outstanding scientists, politicians, writers, artists, engravers, publishers and booksellers. The article describes the concise history of the Society’s activity in XVIII century with an accent to its role in the developing positive attitude of the British to the England gothic past.
