«Domestic» and «Commercial» Restoration-Conservation: on the Question of Evidence of the Terms

Conservation of cultural heritage objects as a scientific discipline is currently at the stage of formation. Conservation terminology is not yet fully verified as well. Several frequently used words and stable phrases claiming the status of terms, do not seem convincing enough as such. So, the phrases «commercial conservationrestoration», «museum conservation-restoration» and others characterizing conservation according to its motive or place of execution, do not quite stand up to criticism, since the place or motive of works do not yet determine their essential qualities. To describe the characteristics of conservation, it seems more reasonable to operatewith the concepts of styles: archaeological, imitation, rational. The development and refinement of conservation terminology is important insofar as inaccuracies in terminology lead to possible errors both in understanding of processes and phenomena and in practice
