The basic model adopted in 1989 for reforming the domestic film industry, developed in the bowels of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR, turned out to be unviable in practice, since the real circumstances were not taken into account. In particular, no protectionist measures were envisaged that would allow domestic films to compete with foreign products. But the main reason that today Russian cinema makes up an insignificant part of the film repertoire in Russia lies in the insufficient attention of the initiators of the film reform to the problem of «cinema and the audience». The article examines the nature of the process of transferring the domestic film industry to market rails, begun 35 years ago, analyzes the reasons and consequences of this process, which determined the fate of the Lenfilm film studio
