The placement, reconstruction, and modernization of libraries located in rooms that are not intended for the organization of reader services is one of the most difficult practical problems of library science and architectural design. All types of libraries, including university libraries, face a similar problem. In each such case, the problem of organizing the library space gets a unique, atypical solution. The Soviet architects who were engaged in designing libraries – F.  N.  Pashchenko, L.  Z.  Amlinsky, V.  G.  Gelfreich, A.  R.  Zimonenko, etc. – contributed to the development of the problem. They laid the modern and progressive theoretical and methodological foundations of the interdisciplinary section of library science-architecture and construction of library buildings; developed architectural approaches to the adaptation of historical buildings for new functions, which can be considered as «aerobatics» of design, since in this case the library is located and operates in a «non-library» space. An interesting example is the scientific library of the Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Culture (SPbSIC), which is located in the palace of the XVIII century, built in 1784-1788 (the object of cultural heritage «Saltykov House», architect Giacomo Quarenghi)
