Mass libraries in the besieged Leningrad: out-reach services

During the dramatic years of Great Patriotic War and the period of the Siege of Leningrad state mass libraries fully met their social functions and obligations. The physical well-being of librarians suffered from alimentary dystrophy and scurvy is stressed. Librarians not only accumulated and preserved collections, but also motivated and inspired inhabitants to the struggle against Nazism. The article begins with key information on state mass libraries activity in 1941–1943, emphasizes a wide range of first developed directions and provides a total scope of services intended for different groups of customers. The main functional areas of library services are shaped. The primary attention is given to out-reach library services oriented on executing individual, group and mass requests of customers
