This article discusses ways of using the institutional approach to teaching art in the context of a general trend towards the humanization of education. Institutional approach requires precise guidelines, using a number of techniques of pedagogical technologies: simulation of scientific discussion, methods of free association, method of projects. Formation of students’ dialogic thinking, capacity for independent research, communication and presentation activity - important components of learning art. Institutional approach allows us to investigate how current art practice and not to discard centuries of experience in the study of art criticism, interpretation and storage of works of art.
