The article discusses the experience of organizing one of the f rst military-historical museums and library-archival collections dedicated to the World War I (1914–1918), carried out in France on the initiative of spouses Henri Leblanc (1873–1935) and Louise Leblanc (1869–1931). Created as a private collection, over time, the Library-museum of the Great war was transformed into the public Library of international modern documentation (BDIC), and then in part of its museum collection into the Museum of contemporary history (Le Musée d’histoire contemporaine), opened in 1987 at the House of Invalids in Paris. The fate of the collection spouses Leblanc is a typical example of the transformation of private collections in the major social and cultural institutions of national memory – museums, archives and libraries, which enjoy material support from the state
