Collections compiled with the help of Russian diplomats in Eastern countries were among the sources of enrichment of museum collections in the 19th and early 20th century. The article explores dif erent ways that employees of Ministry of Foreign Af airs used to contribute the development of domestic museums. Main functions of a diplomat who was involved in collecting antiques abroad are f gured out. In this case, the diplomat could have been a collector himself, a source of unique information for archaeological expeditions and a helper in temporary storage and transportation of collections. It is shown that Consul General in Kashgar N. F. Petrovsky combined collecting of eastern antiques with coordination of research expeditions, while his colleagues in East Turkestan contributed to storage and transportation of collections. The article also justif es the idea that the main reasons that helped Petrovsky to take part in forming of museum collections were his scientif c links with major Russian orientalists V. R. Rosen and S. F. Oldenburg.
