Research of semiotic space of Russian North culture was conducted on the example of formation and
development of the Solovki and Valaam sign systems, the basic signs of that are the names of geographical
objects of two cultures: Baltic-Finnish and Russian. They name an object and are the carriers of these cultures
memory. The Signs-names characterize the different spheres of cultures: from material, exposing economic
activity of north monasteries to spiritual one, including both ascetic traditions of monks and elements of
mundane culture. The sign systems consist of references-points, boundary signs, signs-metaphors. The signsnames contain also information about the natural landscape of Solovetski and Valaamski archipelagos islands.
Containing from signs symbols have more wide value. They characterize the Solovki and Valaam ancient culture.
In certain situations signs can pass to symbols, having more wide value, than sign. On islands orthodoxy, new
history symbols, memorable signs are saved.
