The piano music of St. Petersburg’ composer of the second half of the twentieth century Valery Gavrilin
is not only a kind of «creative laboratory», but also the most important source of inspiration for him. The article
gives a general assessment of piano creativity in the composer’s heritage. The author touches upon problems,
as well as their publication, layout in collections, cycles. For Gavrilin, the creative tandem was important, the
composer-performer. This cocreation was often decisive in the fate of the Gavrilin writings. Therefore, Gavrilin
was characterized by a psychological feature – «the tragedy of non-embodiment», incomplete opuses. The paper presents an analysis of the compositional style of Valery Gavrilin: the desire for miniature, aesthetics of simplicity, folklorism, romantic orientation, characteristic, brightness and plasticity of images, dance oriented images, genre metamorphoses.
