The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood is one of the key artistic associations in nineteenth-century English art. It was around for fi ve years but disintegrated in 1853. Nevertheless, its members became important fi gures, forming not only the public taste, but also bringing up the next generation of young artists on this basis. The article considers with the development of Edward Coley Burne-Jones’ art, a central representative of the «second wave» of pre-raphaelitism, who continued working under the infl uence of the basic ideas laid down by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The analysis of artist’s early works gets particular attention, which gives the best way to trace his moving away from a fascination with pre-raphaelitism, laid by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, to establish his own artistic style, opening a path to symbolism.
