In a pursuit of the reader: new buildings of the largest libraries of the world

Active construction of new buildings for various national libraries of the world at the end of XX – the beginning XXI century has served as an occasion for meditations in the environment of library experts. At obvious successes a number of the problems connected to fast obsolescence of the equipment and buildings, by ambiguous reaction of a society to similar construction, impossibility to decide all problems of accommodation of funds and the personnel, distinction of sights of architects and librarians, and also associative-shaped perception of a kind of buildings was designated. In article merits and demerits of new buildings of national libraries of China, France, the Great Britain, Japan, Denmark, Singapore, Latvia and other countries are considered. Ambiguity of the architectural projects convenient for readers, but accompanying lacks having set, among which – excessive and grandiosity (or, on the contrary, plainness of appearance), dearness of construction and exploitation, inconvenience for the library personnel and the compelled economy on offi ce accommodations and the whole departments which have been not connected to direct service of users is emphasized.
