Modern restoration practices of Eastern painting

An analysis of methods for preserving the monuments of oriental painting in the State Hermitage Museum are analyzed, and therefore one of the main directions in the activities of the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Oriental Painting is being considered - restoration of glue painting on canvas and silk of the Buddhist icon thang-ka. Issues on the preservation of original techniques and the development of an integrated approach that combines research and practical solutions to the tasks of restoring the thang-ka as a painterly scroll are aimed at updating. Traditional methods of creating, preserving and understanding thang-ka in Buddhist culture are interpreted as one of the significant factors that must be understood and integrated into the formation of scientific principles of conservation and restoration of Buddhist icons. The article highlights the issue of international cooperation and exchange of experience in the restoration of oriental painting. The relationship between the restoration, storage and display of oriental painting on the example of permanent and temporary exhibitions of the State Hermitage Museum is shown.
