Testing is one of the forms of evaluative intermediate control. Practical experience of testing in the process of teaching art history course, which is laid in the core of the article, reveals some peculiarities in composition and application of tests, the necessity of creative approach for formulation the tasks. The notion of test is regarded as a holistic system in the unity of concept, content, form, valuation and interpretation of results. The goals of testing are formulated (informative and practical), factors of complexity and difficulty as well as evaluative criteria are explained. The general rules of composition and structuring materials of tests are considered. The subdivision of tasks on several blocks (types) is recommended according to their formal features and possible subject-matter. The conclusion is being done of testing as an important instrument in verification of student’s knowledge during the academic year.
