Cultural and education activity of zemstvo at a fi eld of traditional land tenure’s modernization

The complexity and ambiguity of the Russia’s search for an eff ective educational model combining
fundamental knowledge and activity approach make it necessary to turn to an analysis of the historical
experience of post-reform Russia. One of the main strategies for the modernization of the state of that period
was the development of lower agricultural education aimed at introduction of the best agricultural practices into
reformed Russian village. Since this policy had diff erent regional content, the aim of this paper is to study Olonets
province’s experience of agricultural knowledge dissemination (this topic has not attracted the special attention
of researchers yet) through the creation of a whole system of cultural and educational activities: agricultural
classes, circles, exhibitions, courses, teacher retraining, and so on. The study of this material allows us to assess the
eff ectiveness of measures to introduce advanced agricultural experience in terms of the dynamics of the agrarian
culture of the Russian North in the post-reform period.
