Androgynous characters in contemporary visual art

The article is devoted to the analysis of visual language in the embodiment of the artistic image of
androgynous characters at the turn of 20th–21st centuries. The analysis of non-sexual images throughout the
history of art is given, the symbolism enclosed in them and the visual embodiment of merge of male and female
in one being is defi ned. A special place in the article is devoted to the art of the late 20th – early 21st century,
emphasizes two important visual languages for artistic expression of androgyny and hermaphroditism – abstract
and realistic. Based on the analysis of a number of paintings, sculptures and photographs, typical forms of work
with the idea of asexuality and bisexuality are determined. So, asexual – androgyny often embodied with the help
abstract forms of, while hermaphroditism presented in the form of characters with a double essence.
