Ural industrialists and science of 18th century

The article is based on a valuable historical source – the Inventory of Property of 1789, compiled after the death of a large Ural industrialist A. F. Turchaninov. The inventory shows the existence in the Urals province of the 18th century a large estate of the nobility, which was not inferior in many respects in its scope and wealth to the largest noble estates of Russia of that time. Turchaninov did not spare the funds for the purchase of luxury goods, was fond of collecting, following the noble fashion of his time. Among his collections were two of natural sciences: mineralogical and for the f rst time in detail presented paleontological one, rarely found in private collections. With specif c examples of Turchaninov and other owners of plants, the inf uence on the cultural level of breeders and their enthusiasm for collecting various «antiquities» and «rarities» on the part of participants in 18th century academic expeditions is shown. An important discovery has been made concerning the fate of some of the lost ethnographic materials of the Second Kamchatka Expedition
