Collecting as a private activity by an individual as well as a cultural phenomenon was a focal point of intellectual life of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin. While consciously sharing the concepts of traditional principles of collecting, Benjamin promoted new, performative nature of collecting. He asserted the importance of tactile contact between the collector and the subject in the cultural environment. He claimed the eventuality as the principle of the formation of the collection and the fundamental fragmentation and incompleteness as a condition for its constant development. The nonclassical model of the excessive, close, conceptually weak and versatile dialogue with the heritage and methods of its representation were the subject of analysis. Comprehension of these concepts allows us to justify the closeness of the said performative strategy to current art practices. In addition, to point out the signifi cance of such experience for exploration of new forms of representing museum collections and their involvement in relevant cultural interactions
