Typology of immoral behavior in the Buddhist ethics

Medieval Indian Buddhist culture elaborated basic principles of analysis of human action from the canonical position. The typology of immoral verbal behavior, presented in fundamental exegetic compendium «The Encyclopedia of Abhidharma» (Abhidharmakośa) by Vasubandhu (4–5 centuries) is of special scholarly interest in this aspect. The author of the present article considers four categories that form this typology, viz. lie, slander, idle talk, and insult. Buddhist ethical analysis of sinful types of verbal activity aimed at the explication of their affective motivation, which determined immoral behavior. The article describes the methods of ethical diagnostics of sinful verbal actions and their transcendental effects in the view of the Buddhist teaching of karma.
