Lubok “Conversation between a professor and a peasant” as an image of two types of culture

The author considers the lubok «Conversation between a professor and a peasant» as an image of two types of cultures – traditional, with ancient Russian roots, and innovative, borrowed from the Western European world. This lubok is an illustration of the theory of the binary nature of Russian culture. The article provides a visual and textual analysis of the folk image. The text of the lubok in the form of questions and answers has a polemical character. Because for the Old Believer culture the lubok has become an instrument of visual polemics and edification in faith, the author for the first time puts forward a hypothesis about the Old Believer origin of the lubok. A source of the text that was subjected to Old Believer satire was V. N. Tatishchev’s essay «A Conversation about the benefits of sciences and colleges».
