Interpretation of «Roman» in the Russian tradition and Italian sculpture of the XI-XIII centurie

The article deals with the questions of use the term «Romanesque art» in domestic and foreign scientific-research practice, describes and compares the concept of interpretations of this concept. The author studies the problems of historical and territorial boundaries of the style, explores the relationship between the definition of «Romanesque» with Italian artistic tradition, analyzing the Italian sculpture of the XI-XIII centuries in the context of the stylistic evolution of forms, traces the genesis and evolution of the term on the basis of vast material Lombard and Tuscan temples from Late Ottonian plastics to the works of Proto-Renaissance masters. The article poses the problem of using the concepts of the first and second Romanesque style, it addresses the question of a departure from the traditional scheme of artistic styles to the use of principles of a more precise dating of monuments.
